Consumer spending was affected by the recession, with households saving more, especially on durable goods. During the recession, consumer spending decreased due to job loss, income loss, and rising prices of goods. This was one of the most powerful factors affecting consumer behavior in 2023. While the United States economy has crawled out of a recession, consumer spending may still be on hold.
